SUN’s 30th Birthday didn’t go unnoticed or uncelebrated! The Post-Standard did a story on our activities over the past 30 years, interviewing many SUN leaders and digging into their archives for some cool photos. The online story is titled “30 years of advocating”. Either stop by the SUN office or dig up a copy of the Saturday October 13th, 2007 Post-Standard to check out the pictures, including SUN members Mary Graham and Joanne Stevens as part of a crowd protesting on the front stoop of the President of M & T Bank out in Manlius.

Over 170 folks came out to celebrate at our 30th Birthday Party on October 20th at the Valley American Legion Hall. Everyone seemed to like the buffet dinner, gospel music and the chance to talk with neighbors from all of SUN’s neighborhood coalitions. SUN also received a citation Assemblywoman Joan Christensen, who reminisced about her experiences with SUN, both as a member of the Common Council and in Albany.

Congratulations to the members of the Board of Directors sworn in for their year term of office. Officers: Richard Breland–Chairperson, Grace Callahan–Co-Chairperson, Barbara Devoise–Secretary, Claire McGrath–Treasurer. Southside Coalition Representatives:Marva Hudson, Maria Johnson, Peter Polikarpenko, Carolyn Stanley and Cynthia Wright Westside Coalition Representatives: Donna Kay Campbell, Alton Edwards, Allen Moltrup and Donald Walrath. Southwest Represenatives: Eddie H. Brown and Mattie Johnson.

The next meeting of SUN’s Southside Coalition meeting will be on Monday October 8th at 7:00 P.M. at Payton Memorial Temple, 1816 Midland Ave.

Our guest will be Deputy Police Chief Frank Fowler and we will be talking to him about efforts to reduce drug crime and violence in the McKinley Park/W. Newell St. area. We will not limit discussions to that particular area, so if there is a problem drug house or street corner in your neighborhood, come out to the meeting and get your problems addressed.
