Vacant Houses Aren’t Up To Code

Sabrina Rautio, Louise Thompson, Olga Podolak and Carolyn Stanley
chat with a member of the city’s Division of Code
Enforcement. SUN delivered an invitation to Director Jim Blakeman to
attend our public Town Hall meeting on vacant
houses. The meeting will be held on Monday April 28th at 7 P.M. at
St. Anthony’s Church Hall 1515 Midland Ave.

We let Code Enforcement know that if they had trouble finding the
hall, it’s the church across the street from the nine
boarded up houses in the two surrounding blocks (oh, and five vacant
lots where houses were demolished.)

Hey Mr. Mayor, Please RSVP!

Mayor Driscoll and City Attorney Rory McMahon to SUN’s upcoming
public Town Hall meeting on vacant houses.

Director of Operations Tim Carroll is shown here accepting the
invitations, as well as getting an earful about the problems
vacant houses are causing in our neighborhoods.

SUN Doesn’t Fool Around On April 1st–City Hall Protest On Vacant Houses

City Hall
Press Conference

20 SUN neighborhood leaders used April Fool’s Day to protest the
weak city plans to reduce the number of vacant houses in SUN’s
neighborhoods on the city’s south, southwest and near-west sides.
As the statements made by SUN leaders Sabrina Rautio and Ann
Reynolds pointed out, SUN’s neighborhoods on the south, southwest
and near-west sides of the city comprise only 15% of the entire
number of city households, yet these same neighborhoods harbor
over 500 vacant houses–45% of the entire city’s total.

At a press conference on the steps of City Hall, SUN announced
it will host two public Town Hall meetings to develop plans to
systematically reduce the number of vacant houses in our
neighborhoods.

The first public meeting will be held on Monday April 28th
at 7 P.M. in St. Anthony’s Church Hall, 1515 Midland Ave. SUN
has invited Mayor Driscoll, City Attorney Rory McMahon, Director of
Code Enforcement Jim Blakeman and all 10 members of the
Common Council.
